Composite Filling-
Composite fillings, a tooth colored filling made of a safe, synthetic resin that is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay, chipped or fractured. At Dentistry by Design we primarily use composite fillings for the following reasons:
Aesthetics – Composite fillings can be closely matched to the color of your existing teeth, making them a great option for front or visible parts of teeth.
Bonded – Composite filling bonds to the tooth structure providing more support.
Less prone to cracking – Silver fillings are more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures causing them to expand and contract, which can cause the tooth to crack. Composites have a higher resistance to these temperatures making the tooth less likely to crack.
Versatility – Composites can be used for fillings, repairing chipped or cracked teeth, or to fill a space between two teeth.
Porcelain Crowns (Caps)
A crown, also known as a cap, is a covering that encases the existing tooth, restoring it to its original shape, size and functionality. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth it is covering that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (ceramic tooth colored crowns) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting smile. Some crowns are made of metal (like Gold) or made with a combination of both metal and porcelain.
Reasons for crowns:
Broken or cracked teeth.
Cosmetic enhancement.
Decayed teeth.
Fractured fillings.
Large fillings.
Tooth has a root canal.
What does getting a crown involve?
A crown procedure usually requires two visits to our office. Your first appointment will include taking several molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by one of the dental laboratories we use. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly. At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate. You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
Whitening-
Having a bright, white smile has become the number one cosmetic concern of most dental patients. At Dentistry by Design we use the Opalescence Tooth Whitening System to help you achieve the bright smile you desire. Opalescence offers safe, effective and long lasting results.
This type of tooth whitening requires two visits to our office. At the first appointment a limited exam is performed to ensure the overall health of your teeth and gums. During this visit you will also receive impressions (molds) of your teeth to create custom, clear plastic trays that you will wear at home.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit and adjustments will be made if necessary. You will also receive instructions on how to properly use the product to receive the degree of whitening you desire, as well as how to care for your molds and gel.
Dental Implants- Main
Dr. John Sledge offers start to finish dental implant services to patients in and around the Northern Door County area. Looking at a smile with dental implants is like looking at a smile with natural teeth. They are the closest thing offered to natural teeth and will preserve your facial structure, restore chewing ability and allow you to smile with confidence.
If you lost a tooth/teeth due to periodontal disease, accident, injury, medical condition or some other reason, dental implants are a great way to replace those missing teeth. Dental implants are also an effective way to stabilize dentures.

Process of Placing Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth that are surgically placed into the upper and/or lower jaw bone. Implants provide a strong foundation for the replacement of missing teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. They are also a great way to provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures.
Reasons for dental implants:
Preserves facial structure; preventing bone deterioration that occurs with tooth loss.
Strengthens a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable.
Restores chewing and speech.
Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space.
Restores a confident smile!
The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile! Dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable. They last many years, but on occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.
What does getting dental implants involve?
The process of getting implants requires multiple visits over several months. X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself into the bone for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time. After several weeks of healing the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because several fittings may be required, this step may take one to two months to complete. After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.
