Dental restorations become necessary when the natural tooth structure becomes compromised. This can happen as a result of tooth decay, injury, or when the replacement of current dental restorations is required. Dentistry by Design offers a variety of restorative options including composite (tooth-colored) fillings, crowns, bridges, root canal therapy, and dental implants.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings, a tooth colored filling made of a safe, synthetic resin that is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay, chipped or fractured. At Dentistry by Design we primarily use composite fillings for the following reasons:
Aesthetics – Composite fillings can be closely matched to the color of your existing teeth, making them a great option for front or visible parts of teeth.
Bonded – Composite filling bonds to the tooth structure providing more support.
Less prone to cracking – Silver fillings are more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures causing them to expand and contract, which can cause the tooth to crack. Composites have a higher resistance to these temperatures making the tooth less likely to crack.
Versatility – Composites can be used for fillings, repairing chipped or cracked teeth, or to fill a space between two teeth.
Porcelain Crown (Caps)
A crown, also known as a cap, is a covering that encases the existing tooth, restoring it to its original shape, size and functionality. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth it is covering that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (ceramic tooth colored crowns) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting smile. Some crowns are made of metal (like Gold) or made with a combination of both metal and porcelain.
Reasons for crowns: Broken or cracked teeth. Cosmetic enhancement. Decayed teeth. Fractured fillings. Large fillings. Tooth has a root canal.
Dentures & Partial Dentures
We offer both full and partial dentures at our Door County Dental practice. We will work with you to achieve comfortable, natural-looking dentures that will allow you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.
Benefits: If you have lost most or all of your teeth due to decay or injury, replacing the missing teeth will benefit your health and appearance. Dentures will allow you to chew properly, will keep your remaining teeth from shifting, keep your facial muscles from sagging and allow you to speak clearly.
What are Dentures: A full denture is a complete row of teeth, either top or bottom, mounted on a gum colored base and requires an adhesive to hold them in place. Partial dentures consist of multiple teeth spread out across the base to fit with your existing teeth. Again they are on a gum colored base and are kept in place with clips or brackets. Dentures are very durable and will last many years, but may have to be repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal becomes necessary when the root of the tooth has sustained some type of damage. This damage could be caused by injury, decay, or infection. A root canal procedure involves removing the damaged root and filling the vacant space with a special dental material to seal the area.In certain cases, our dentist may refer patients who require root canal therapy to an endodontist. An endodontist specializes in root canals and is trained to handle more complex root canal issues.
